In 2017, President Masaki Sashima organized a trip to visit the Salmon People of North America, learning about Native Title from the Indian Tribe of Washington State, U.S.A. In 2020, the Urahoro Ainu Association changed its name to the Raporo Ainu Nation because of our strong desire to achieve fishing rights and sovereignty like the Tribe in the United States.

On August 17, 2020, the Raporo Ainu Nation filed a lawsuit in the Sapporo District Court against the national government and Hokkaido, seeking confirmation of its right to harvest salmon under Ainu indigenous rights. This is the first lawsuit in Japan based on the right of indigenous peoples. This lawsuit has drawn a great deal of attention and support from many citizens.
